The first rule is that you want to control the swelling as soon as possible so you reduce the rehabilitation time. Swelling is occurring within 1 or 2 hours and the problem is that it may take weeks to resolve. Excessive swelling causes lots of problems such as pain, decreased range of motion, decreased strength and loss of function. Also, inflammation which is part of the healing process, requires more oxygen when oxygen is already decreased by the injury and the swelling. This hypoxia (lack of oxygen) accelerates the death of more cells which increases the inflammation. So again, to break this vicious circle, controlling swelling is key.

A good way to do so is to combine the homeopathic Arnica (topically and internally) and the RICE technique: Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation

Icing in the first 48-72 hours has several benefits: it has an analgesic effect (numb feeling), it slows the metabolic activity of the cells therefore decreasing the need for oxygen and the hypoxia. A useful reminder: do not place ice directly in contact with your skin to avoid chilblains. Always put fabric between your skin and the ice pack. I personally prefer a bag of frozen peas because this is not as cold and not as heavy as an ice pack and it shapes itself around the area where you need it. After diagnosis is done and approximately thirty minutes to one hour after the cold pack has been removed, apply Arnicare topically (if the skin is broken, apply it around the wound).

As a teenager I used to sprain my ankle pretty often, and once it was particularly painful and got worst the first night. My parents were not worried because my the doctor had come by earlier and said it was not severe. They wanted to relieve the pain though, so they called the doctor again who gave us a good tip: when ice is not working because the weight of the pack is putting pressure and making the pain worse, or because it is falling off the ankle while you sleep, a good alternative is to wrap the ankle with compresses soaked into rubbing alcohol. The relief is amazing.

Compressing must be done immediately after the accident, ideally using an elastic wrap that should not be wrapped too tightly to allow blood circulation. Leave it on for several days and only remove it when you are icing and showering and to put Arnicare gel on.

Elevating: for a leg injury, place a pillow below the knee or ankle.

Rest: the more rest you can get the quicker the recovery will be.

As soon as possible, in all cases of trauma, take arnica Montana 6C, 5 pellets every hour and then as needed. A good idea is to always carry a tube of arnica in your sport bag. You may want to carry several as you WILL give them away very often!

If a sprain is diagnosed, you can also add the following homeopathic medicines:

Apis 30C, Bryonia 6C and Ruta graveolens 6C: take 5 pellets of each every hour for 48 hours, then 3 times a day for 3 weeks.

Needless to say that all those tips do not replace a doctor’s visit. But they can help a lot.

This is another segment of what we discussed on my May interview about women’s health on  Here’s to Your Health . It is a very common complaint that does not get very satisfying answers with conventional medicines, either because they do not work very well, or because of their side effects. That is why homeopathy should be considered.

Cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are due to stronger contractions of the muscles of the uterus during the menstruation. The pain can vary a lot in intensity from one woman to another. It typically starts with the period and gets worse during the first two or three days, and then decreases. These contractions are triggered by the prostaglandins. To be more precise, the series two prostaglandins (there are different types of prostaglandins and they are involved in many physiological mechanisms). Those prostaglandins are largely secreted by the uterus before the period. When the period starts, the prostaglandins are released and are responsible for vessel constriction and muscle contraction in the uterus, causing cramping and pain. Some of the prostaglandins can also get into the blood stream and cause headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

As a side note, a factor that can make cramps worse is a low-fat diet that is not balanced properly. This can increase the production of those series two prostaglandins. That is why fish oils can be very beneficial in menstrual cramps, precisely because they are a good source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Here we are talking about the common menstrual cramps and what you can do to alleviate them:  there are many ways to approach the issue of menstrual cramps homeopathically, so let’s talk about the easiest one: CYCLEASE CRAMP from Boiron, which is a safe and convenient way to quickly soothe pain, soreness and cramping associated with menstruation. You do not need a prescription to get it and you do not have to worry about side effects such as drowsiness or nausea. It will not interact with other medicines and is not contraindicated with pre-existing conditions. From my observations, it seems that with time, you will need to use it less and less.

These quick-dissolving tablets contain three single homeopathic medicines that specifically target cramps.

Active ingredients:

Cimicifuga racemosa 6C (prepared from the Black Cohosh) for menstrual cramps improved by lying down

Colocynthis 6C (prepared from the pulp of the Bitter cucumber) for menstrual cramps improved by bending over

Magnesia phosphorica 6C (prepared from Magnesium phosphate) for menstrual cramps improved by warmth

Directions: Dissolve 2 tablets in the mouth as soon as you feel the pain coming and repeat as needed. Remember, you cannot overdose on homeopathic medicines.

If your symptoms are very easy to identify and to qualify, you can also get one of these medicines that suits you best. For example, if you always feel better by placing a hot bottle on your abdomen when you are experiencing cramps, you could take 5 pellets of Magnesia phosphorica every 15 minutes for an hour or as needed.

When should you see a physician?

Of course, there are also extreme situations that require seeing a doctor, such as endometriosis (lining tissue of the uterus that gets outside the uterus), fibromas (benign tumors in the uterus or ovaries), and infections. So if symptoms do not resolve within a few days, but  persist for more than seven days or worsen, see a physician. Fever is also an indication that something is not right. Girls younger than 12 years old should also be examined by a doctor before taking any treatment.

I heard from my brother today and he is getting better. His main complaint though is the fact that he developed canker sores. This was probably due to the irritation caused by the intubation and by stress and tiredness. He is prone to suffering from this issue, as many of us (1 in 5 people) occasionally are. Although these mouth sores usually go away by themselves, they can be large and numerous. (He counted 6 of them!) They can be very painful and can take up to

2 weeks to regress and finally heal. Some severe ones can last several months. In the mean time they can really impact the way you eat, drink and talk. Although we do not know exactly what causes them and why some people are prone to getting them, there are several factors that seem to trigger them:

  • mechanical frictions (dentures, braces, even a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard, etc.)
  • some foods in susceptible individuals such as nuts, mainly walnuts, certain hard cheeses like Swiss and Cheddars, certain acidic fruits such as pineapple, etc. or preservatives and artificial flavors
  • modification of hormones level in women (canker sores appearing just before periods or going into menopause
  • quitting smoking
  • stress and anxiety
  • some medicines
  • deficiency in iron and certain vitamins such as B12 and B9, but this pretty rare in our countries

You may want to change your toothpaste as it can have an impact as well. I would also stay away from mouthwashes that are too strong or I would dilute them with warm water in a glass. If the contact of liquids with the sores is very painful, use a straw—except for hot beverages, obviously!

SOLUTIONS: If you talk to your dentist or physician they will probably tell you there is not much you can do and that it will go away eventually.

So here are my tips:

  1. Baking soda mouthwashes: Rinse several times a day with a mixture of half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water. This changes the acid/alkaline balance in your mouth and provides relief.
  2. HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES:  There are mainly 2 that I used myself and recommended to others and that I found quite effective. Try Borax 6C and Mercurius solubilis 6C. You can alternate 5 pellets of each (under your tongue) every hour. One tube contains 80 pellets, so one tube of each would last 3 days. You should see an improvement before you finish the tubes.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR?

Most of the time, canker sores are not dangerous but since they can sometimes get infected or be the sign of a more serious condition, you should see your doctor if they persist or are accompanied by fatigue, fever, pallor of the face and other signs such as diarrhea, weight loss, etc. You should be even more cautious if you are a smoker or a former smoker.
