A swimmer swimming

Since this is still summer and a pretty warm one, many people are looking for relief by going to the pool or the beach. As a consequence, some might experience a condition called swimmer’s ear. It is actually an otitis externa and the symptoms are : stinging pain and burning sensation associated with hypersecretion of ear wax (cerumen). If left untreated it can lead to an acute otitis.

The usual causes are:

- humidity, and that is why it is called swimmers ear: after swimming, it often happens that water remains in the ear canal,  promoting the development of bacteria and funghi. The most common bacteria responsible for outer ear infection are Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Those are often carried by healthy people  (for example, 25% carry Staphylococcus in their nose, mouth, etc.) and under the ”right” circumstances they can develop and cause an infection.

-improper use of cotton swabs to clean the ears: it can damage the skin lining of the ear canal that may break, and lead to infection.

-ear plugs, hearing aids, headphones and so on, can also contribute to the occurrence of swimmer’s ear. I recommend to clean those regularly by using rubbing alcohol. Even chemicals from shampoos can be a factor.

The homeopathic solution: Capsicum annuum 6C (which is made from the chili pepper) 5 pellets every hour for 2 hours and then 3 times a day for 2 to 3 days. It is used in stabbing otalgia with congestive eardrum and is a good medicine for swimmer’s ear.

Use Capsicum as soon as possible and of course, see a doctor if pain becomes hard to control or if there is dizziness, or any other signs of a more serious condition.

For other ear issues, you can read my post on baby earache and the one on earache aboard a plane.

Cradle cap or crusta lactea (to show that I know latin!) is a seborrheic dermatitis that happens in 2 babies out of 3 and can start as early as 1 month old. It can last up to three years old. The scalp (part of it or all) and sometimes parts of the face become flaky with yellowish greasy scales. Moms usually remove the flakes by applying almond oil which softens and makes them easier to remove with a comb. It is not dangerous and often goes away by itself. But it does not look good and more important, it can sometimes become very irritating, get infected or be linked to a fungal infection. Usual treatments go from dandruff shampoos to Rx cortisone creams or anti-fugal topical medicines, and all their side effects. Since most parents want to keep their children away from harsh treatments as much as possible, here is a way to treat cradle cap with a homeopathic medicine:

Calcarea carbonica 6C

Just dilute 5 pellets in a little bit of water and have your baby sip on it. Do this twice a day. It should take care of it and bring back your baby’s head to what it is supposed to be: smooth and smelling delicious! Once again, remember that the homeopathic treatment will work better and faster if you start it early on.

The apples of …

Apple fruit

Who does not like the taste of a crispy and sweet apple? Well, sometimes I wonder, especially when I see a kid eating a sugary Danish as a snack. Apples used to be our favorite snack when we were children. Every day after school and as a reward for good behavior (real or not), my brother was allowed to choose between a bright red big apple or a vibrant green one. Times they are sure changin’! But since it keeps the doctor away, why not make it again a habit of eating apples? My grandfather had an orchard with a few apple trees. I remember picking the apples before they were ripe because I could not wait (and because in this central and beautiful area of France there were so few real sunny days that the apples would never get very sweet anyway!). Although they were pretty small and hard and ugly-looking,  I liked the tart taste of it and the feeling of clean mouth (almost disinfected) I was left with. Other than that they were probably very poor in nutrients and difficult to digest. Now I know that you get much more from a big ripe tasty apple…. So here are some tips to help you enjoy this wonderful fruit:

-Apples are a great source of antioxidants, including polyphenols, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Antioxidants are very important to us as they are known to help prevent and repair oxidation damage that happens during normal cell activity. Therefore eating food rich in antioxidants helps lowering the level of those damaging free radicals in our body.

-If you are watching your weight, apples  are  a snack you should favor as they are low in calories (between 45 and 100 per apple) and rich in fiber, and potassium.

-It is important to know that the skin has a much higher concentration of antioxidants than the flesh and also contains beneficial substances that the flesh does not. That is why you should eat the skin whenever it is possible so you get the most of what an apple can provide. Be sure to wash your apple thoroughly (to remove dirt and wax) but be aware that the skin is the part of the apple that contains the most pesticides. If you cannot find organic apples I would recommend to peel them before eating.

-There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples and each one has its own texture, flavor and unique skin color. The color of the skin reflects the chemical make up of the apple and it is wise to try apples of all colors so your body can benefit from different kinds of phytonutrients.,

-Fuji apples that are very popular in the US, have the highest total phenilic and total flavonoid content of any apple.

-Red Delicious apple may be one of the healthiest foods on earth. It contains more antioxidants than seven other apple varieties. It ranks 12th as far as its antioxidant concentration  on a list of 100 foods. Granny Smith ranks 13th. Those two varieties also contain high levels of collagen and elastin. That makes them very beneficial to your skin.

-Jonagolds and Golden Delicious apples contain the most quercetin which is a memory booster, and couldn’t we all use this?

-You will get much more benefit by eating a fresh apple than apple sauce and apple juice which contain only a small fraction of nutrients found in fresh apples and have more sugar. Also remember that some vitamins (such as vitamin C) are destroyed by heat.

-Pesticides: bad news! Although excellent for us on a nutritional level, apples are ones of the most pesticide-laden fruits, along with  peaches, nectarines, strawberries, and cherries. It is a good reason to buy organic apples. I am aware that only some of us can afford or decide to buy organic. However, if you have to make a choice, base it on the list of items that are most likely to contain high-pesticide levels: those are the ones you want organically grown. The other bad news is that rinsing your apple will not remove most of the pesticides since they are not water-soluble (they have to resist rain, aren’t they?). You can add a little scrubbing or a little bit of detergent  and make sure to rinse thoroughly. In any case, it will remove only a potion of the residues and even peeling will not help completely since there is some pesticides that have been incorporated into the apple while it was growing.

-Keep in mind that even organic fruits and vegetables have to be washed.

-Storage: Going back to my grandparents’ house, I still remember the wonderful smell of the basement where apples used to be stored (I would even volunteer to get stuff from the basement just for the typical and refreshing scent!). As a matter of fact, apples can keep for months when stored properly and this is how people were able to keep eating fruits in the winter,  long after the picking season. Over time there is definitely loss of some nutrients, but a good portion remains.

Last, I am sharing a tip from my grandmother: the bigger the fruit, the sweeter. This is because a big fruit is one that got more sun exposure that allowed it to develop. And more sun means more sugar! You’ll thank me later.

Baby

Baby (Photo credit: Black Glenn)

This one is for my cousins back in France. They have two adorable boys and the youngest often suffers from otitis media. Those middle ear infections are pretty common and can be quite painful. You do not want them to keep happening as there can be complications and also consequences on your child’s hearing. Allergy can sometime trigger those ear infections so I would encourage you to check if your child has any food allergies.  Also it seems that a baby who is drinking from his bottle lying down has more chances to get ear infection because of liquid dripping into the ear, so it is better to feed her with her head in a more upright position.

I put together an easy protocol to treat acute otitis media and to decrease their recurrence. If you have young children who are prone to it, I recommend having those homeopathic medicines at home (and in your purse if you are traveling), so you can start them as soon as possible. It does not mean that you should not contact your physician but you can always start the homeopathic treatment while you are making an appointment (very often kids start an otitis at the worst time such as in the evening, at the beginning of a long weekend, or on vacation in Thailand, when it is not the easiest thing to get in touch with the doctor…).

Start by giving one dose of Oscillococcinum and repeat every 6 hours.

Give Belladonna 9C, Ferrum phosphoricum 9C and Capsicum annuum 6C, 5 pellets of each every hour for 3 hours and then 3 times a day

Then,  add the following, according to the circumstances:

If your child has also a cold, sore throat or sinus infection and the otitis starts at night and is very painful: 5 pellets of Arsenicum album 9C, 3 times a day

If the otitis happens while your child is teething, give 5 pellets of Chamomilla 30C 3 times a day. (Chamomilla is commonly used to treat teething, so you will ”kill two birds with one stone”!)

Also, here are some other recommendations:

Some parents like to use ear drops and you can find some natural ones that contain garlic, which has powerful natural anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. When taken internally, garlic is also known to strengthen the immune system. However, before using ear drops, you should make sure that there is no chance that the ear drum is perforated because that would cause the liquid to get to the middle ear and cause other issues. That is why I would recommend to get your physician’s advice before using ear drops in a child, even more so if there is fever and a lot of pain. Another tips is to warm up the bottle in your hands so the difference in temperature between the liquid and the inside of the ear is not so important and does not cause additional discomfort (this is valid for Rx drops as well, obviously).

Some doctors like to recommend what we call gemmotherapy: those are liquid herbal extracts that come from the very young parts of different plants. They are very popular in France and you can also find them here. Give 5 to 8 drops (in a little bit of water) twice a day to an infant, and 12 to 15 drops twice a day to children under 8 years old. For older children, give 25 drops twice a day. Be aware that once you have opened the bottle, you cannot keep it for more than 3 weeks. For ear infections in children those two are mainly used:

Briar Rose (or Rosa canina, for my French cousins!). It also strengthens the immune system

European hornbeam (or Carpinus Betulus), especially if the otitis occurs while there is another upper respiratory infection (cold, sinus, etc.)

Hey, I hope it helps dear cousins!
