ARNICA MONTANA!

A few days ago, both my brother and my father had surgery. Without any prodding from me, they already had planned to take their pellets of homeopathic Arnica montana before and after the procedure.

As a side note, they both live in France where the distribution of homeopathic medicines is quite different: first of all, you can only find them at the pharmacy and they are not available over the counter (OTC). Even though you do not need a prescription for most of them, you still need to talk to a pharmacist or a tech to get them. By the way this is the same procedure for buying vitamins and supplements. You cannot find any vitamin stores in France. I actually enjoy how it is here. I can spend time looking at all the boxes and studying the formulas and shop for what I think are the best products.

I have to explain that I do get lots of positive feedback about Arnica and surgery since I have met with many surgeons over the years, mainly plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills. Many of them have their patients take Arnica pre- and post-surgery to minimize bruising and swelling. It even has an action on pain. For obvious reasons, the facial plastic surgeons are particularly fond of it. Dr Andrew Ordon, MD, who has the TV show “The Doctors” and whom I have known for many years, puts each patient on Arnica pellets before and after the procedure. He even did a segment about it on the show. He has a very deep practical knowledge of Arnica because he has been using it for so long. But its benefits are not limited to plastic surgery patients. My brother and father did not get their nose fixed although… (I am just kidding.) Anybody who undergoes a trauma, which would include events like various surgeries and dental work, will benefit from Arnicare.  I personally always use it right after dental work, even a simple cleaning. Oh, I have a story about this: a few months ago, I went to my dentist—who is wonderful—and while giving me a shot to anesthetized the tooth in question, he hit a capillary and made the area bleed. It happens from time to time, especially if your face does not have a lot of fat tissues. Anyway, right away he said that it was nothing but that I would feel like someone punched me in the face (nice) and that I would be black and blue pretty soon. He felt there was nothing we could do at this point to minimize it. That felt really great, especially when not only was I supposed to explain the wonders of Arnica to doctors, but I also had to appear on Internet radio (which is live and also filmed) a few days later. Well, I took 5 pellets of Arnica every 15 minutes first and then every hour, then finally 3 times a day for at least a week and I also applied the gel. I did have a cheek slightly bigger than the other one and the area was a little yellowish for a few days. I could feel it was slightly swollen and every morning I was expecting the hematoma to show and “hang” below my jaw line, but it did not! Only people who knew me well and who paid attention noticed it but I know it would have been much worse without Arnica.

So now, a little bit of information: Arnica montana is the Latin name for Mountain daisy and is a very popular homeopathic medicine all over the world. If you happen to mention it to people from Mexico, for example, most of them are very aware of it as it is part of their traditional medicines. If there is one medicine that you should have in your cabinet for first aid it is Arnica. It exists under different forms, as a topical that you apply on your skin and as pellets (sublingual) and tablets for a systemic action. So when do you use it? You can use it on bumps, and bruises, and will use it often for those reasons if you have kids. It’s great for overexertion (such as after going to the gym, moving, gardening) as well as trauma and injury such as sprains, surgery. Do not use the topical forms (gel, cream or ointment) on broken skin though because it can cause some irritation. Use the pellets instead. Kids like to take the pellets because they taste sweet and they apply the gel gladly since it has no strong smell. They will soon ask for it every time they hurt themselves. By the way, there is no risk of over dosage with homeopathic medicines so even if a child eats all the pellets in a tube of Arnica (not that I recommend it) there is no danger and that’s another thing you do not have to worry about. Just go get another tube!

So when you have a surgery scheduled, I would encourage you to take 5 pellets of Arnica 12C or 30C, 3 times a day, at least 2 days prior to the procedure and then carry on for 5 to 10 days according to how you reacted to the surgery. Why before? It seems Arnica has a protective action on the capillaries. Additionally, you well know that after an anesthesia, for example, it is going to take time for you to get back to your normal state and taking your pellets when you are still in a fog might not be the first thing you think about. So if it is already in your system, you will start receiving the benefit sooner.

You are all eager to know how my Dad and brother are doing, right? It seems they are recuperating quite fast, thank God. My Dad took a long walk the next day and my brother is fine. (He did not tell me much yet since he had to be intubated during the procedure and it made his throat pretty raw so it was difficult for him to talk. But again, Arnica is a good indication for this type of sore throat, and there are other homeopathic medicines as well. Plus being a physician himself he knows what to do). We will see what the surgeons think in a few days.

Here are some key points about the Arnica products that Boiron manufactures, which I obviously use:

  • Unlike many other over-the-counter pain relief gels, Boiron’s Arnicare Gel not only treats muscle aches and stiffness but it also safely relieves swelling and discoloration from bruising.
  • The active ingredient is Arnica montana, also known as Mountain daisy, a perennial plant commonly found in the Northwestern parts of the U.S. and Central Europe.
  • Arnica has been used for centuries as a natural pain reliever. Today doctors and pharmacists recommend Arnica in more than 25 countries throughout the world.
  • Increasing numbers of plastic surgeons and other medical professionals are turning to the healing benefits of Arnica to relieve post-procedure bruising, swelling and pain in their patients.
  • Arnicare Gel contains 7 percent Arnica tincture, a concentration that will not trigger side effects but will relieve pain and inflammation from trauma or muscle overexertion, as well as swelling and bruising.
  • The gel quickly absorbs into the skin without leaving behind a greasy or sticky residue. It has no artificial colors or perfumes so there is no medicinal smell.
  • Arnica is also available in cream, ointment and oral pellets or tablets.

As I said before I am a professional education specialist for Boiron in LA. It means that I spend a good portion of my time meeting mainly physicians and we discuss homeopathy, education options, integration of it in their practice and availability of it their patients. Since I started I have noticed that the interest doctors have in homeopathy has grown as much as their expectation. The way they look at it has also changed a lot and I think it also comes from their patients who themselves want to know more and have more options. There was, and there still are, a lot of misconceptions, misunderstandings and myths about this therapeutic method and I would like to make it easier to understand. I will probably go into more details in the future and there some good resources that I will mention if you want to learn more. The history of homeopathy is also quite fascinating and I will dedicate a whole post to it later.

To summarize I would say that homeopathy does not have the same fragmented approach to patients, illness and treatment as what we are usually get used to. For example if you go to your physician because you have acid reflux, once serious conditions have been eliminated, chances are that you will get a prescription for an antacid medication. Homeopathy does not work that way. It considers your complaint in a larger picture, as a sign of an imbalance and its goal is to put you back into your normal and balanced state as much as possible. It is actually very interesting if you start thinking about it. If you have been sick, you know or you have the intuition that there is a connection between everything that happens to your body, and your mind and the world around you. Don’t you agree? And that is why homeopathy treats the patient as a whole and looks for a tailored treatment for that specific patient. Today, we, the patients are savvier about our health and what is available to us. We demand more personalized care. The same way we want to know what we are eating (and trust me it is not always easy to find out), we no longer accept to be only a passive patient and to take the medicine without knowing the consequences. So we want to have our health back as fully as possible and for that we need the best from conventional and alternative medicines. More and more patients are ready to explore the possibilities of more natural approaches to healing. These possibilities include diet, exercise, herbs, vitamins, supplements and homeopathy with its holistic, humane and natural approach. As a matter of facts, the number of people interested in homeopathy and using it is increasing every year:

  • It is used by millions of patients in about 70 countries and recommended by more than 400,000 healthcare providers.
  • It is used by thousands of healthcare professionals including family physicians, pediatricians, plastic surgeons, dentists, nurses, naturopathic doctors, pharmacists, chiropractor and veterinarians.
  • It was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago as a direct reaction against the harmful medical practices of the time, and it is the original “alternative medicine.” Since then homeopathy has been a popular type of medicine in Europe. For example, 60 percent of the population in France uses homeopathy.

The increased popularity of homeopathy is due to its characteristics: It is one of the safest forms of medicine. Not only do homeopathic medicines not interact with other treatments (including vitamins and supplements), nor do they have side effects such as drowsiness or nausea. They do not change the results of your lab tests and do not mask symptoms. Therefore they will not interfere with future diagnosis, which is very important as you do not want to delay a treatment for a more serious condition. For example, when a child has a wet cough, possibly infected, the last thing you want to do is blocking the expectoration by using the wrong medicine like a cough suppressant. That will not happen with homeopathic medicines. They are very well accepted by everybody, particularly by children and even animals.

So, what is it? The word “homeopathy” comes from the Greek words homeo meaning “similar” and pathos meaning “suffering.” It was first used by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800s. It is a therapeutic system that uses natural substances in micro-doses to relieve symptoms. The active ingredients in homeopathic medicines are diluted plants, animals and minerals. When diluted, these substances relieve the same symptoms they cause at full strength. This is what we called the principle of similarity. As an example, if you are experiencing difficulty falling asleep because you have a lot on your mind—either from exciting good news or worrisome concerns—taking Coffea cruda will help you a lot. Coffea cruda is the homeopathic medicine made from a dilution of the coffee bean and it treats the symptoms that drinking coffee generally causes, such as preventing you from falling asleep or getting you to wake up during the night with your mind being very active.

One of the misconceptions I was mentioning earlier is that homeopathy and herbs are the same. Although many homeopathic medicines come from plants, they differ a lot from herbs because they are using highly diluted fresh plants and prepared according to very specific rules. Consequently, homeopathic medicines are regulated as drugs, as opposed to herbs, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and enzymes, which are all regulated as food supplements.

Another misconception is that a consultation with a homeopath must take hours and that homeopathic medicines take very long to act. The reality is that in acute conditions, these medicines work fast. In chronic conditions, of course it will take longer, but if well prescribed, you should see an improvement pretty early. So again, my advice is to keep some key homeopathic medicines handy so you use them right away, with no delay.

What about regulations?

Like any other medicine, homeopathic medicines are regulated by the FDA (since 1938). It means that the consumer is protected. You can read more about “Conditions under which Homeopathic Drugs May be Marketed (CPG7132.15) on the U.S. FDA’s website (www.fda.gov/ora/compliance_ref/cpg/cpgdrg/cpg400-400.html).

Here I can only speak for what I know best, meaning the Boiron medicines and I can tell that those medicines are high quality. They are for the most part, Boiron’s medicines are made in France. A few are made in the U.S. but all, no matter where they are manufactured are made according to the highest standards of the U.S. drug Good Manufacturing Practices and conform to the Homeopathic Pharmaceopoeia of the United States. They are tested and clearly labeled for specific indications. Everything is traceable. If you would give me one lot number, I could find out which pipette was used and where the plant came from and who controlled it. From the source to the finished product, I could tell you everything. Most homeopathic medicines are over-the-counter; some are prescription only (i.e. low dilution, Rx indications). As with any over-the-counter medicine, it is advisable to check with a doctor or a pharmacist before self-medicating especially if pregnant or nursing. There are other good brands out there but I have to admit I do know enough about them.

Homeopathic medicines can be used to relieve symptoms of a wide range of acute health conditions such as allergies, coughs, colds, flu, stress, arthritis pain, muscle pain, teething, etc. They can also be used by trained physicians to treat more serious conditions and many chronic diseases. In future posts, when I start describing some treatments, you will notice a distinction I make between SINGLE medicines and COMBINATION medicines. Combination medicines were created to make things simpler for the consumer. It means several single medicines are combined to target a set of symptoms for a specific condition (allergy, cold, menstrual cramps,  etc.). The other option is to determine the exact single medicine that you need according to your symptoms and how they manifest themselves in your case. This often requires the visit to a specialist but there are some common single medicines that you can use easily as well, such as Arnica montana and Nux vomica, when you choose to self-medicating and I will often mention them.

Why for your own good?

The idea for this blog came to me after a conversation with my Mom. You see, a pharmacist myself, I come from a family of pharmacists, physicians and optometrists. You can imagine that healing and caring for people have taken a great deal of space in my life so far, and I would like to make the experience I have accumulated available through this blog. I forgot to mention that I am originally from Paris, France—and yes my English is imperfect but I am working on it. It is an ongoing project! It was in France that I earned my doctorate in pharmacy and worked for many years in different pharmacies. A good portion of my job there was to give advice to people who could not go to see their physician or did not want to, as well as giving first aid care for things like burns, cuts and wounds. To me that was the best part. Then, nine years ago I came to Los Angeles to work for Boiron, which is a French company specializing in homeopathic medicines. I am a professional education specialist for the company and have a pretty good knowledge of homeopathy. I am very interested in alternative medicine, nutrition, diet, herbs,  etc. and I am also very attached to “conventional” medicines because I know how important they are, and who can say they will never need them? I also think there is a way to have different types of approach work together and that it is each person’s responsibility to educate them self as much as possible. However, with the overwhelming amount of information that is out there I experience firsthand how difficult it is to create your own opinion and the right decisions. I guess we have to be like our own detective and compare sources to find the most trustworthy sources. That is why I believe personal experience is so valuable. My goal here is to share good and common sense information and tips I have gathered. Many tips I experienced for myself, or through my family and many of my friends that I think could help other people. (Of course, needless to say, but better to say it anyway, nothing I present here is meant to replace a visit to your physician and I will not be able to answer person health issues.)

Beyond this, as discussed with my Mom, I am afraid we are about to lose a lot of the wisdom that was usually passed on from one generation to the next. There are probably many reasons for this, the most obvious being the broken family. So I decided I will include a lot of “old” advice, recipes and traditions that I got from my parents and grandparents because I cherish them and I know they are part of my foundation. That is why I picked the name of the blog: “for your own good.”

I hope you will get something of value in my future posts.
